정관사의 쓰임

1) 정관사의 용법

1. 명사를 되풀이하여 말할 때

Ex) I bought a book at the bookstore

 

2. 분명할 때. 전후관계를 통해 추론 가능한 경우

Ex) Would you mind opening the window?

Ex) Turn off the light.

 

3. 형용사구나 형용사에 의해 수식을 받는 경우

Ex) My sister is the woman standing in front of the house.

 

4. 최상급, 서수, only, next, same 등이 명사를 수식할 때.

Ex) He is the tallest boy in his class.

Ex) Change buses at the second stop.

Ex) He made the same mistake again.

 

5. 하나밖에 존재하지 않는 사물이름 앞에.

① 천체 : the (sun, moon, earth, world, universe, sky)

② 방위 : the (north, south, east, west), the (right, left)

 

6. 계량단위

by the + 단위 표시 명사

Ex) They are hired by the hour.

Ex) Sugar is sold by the pound.

 

7. 신체일부에 어떤 동작을 가하는 경우

① catch, seize, take, hold, grasp : S + V + O + by the 신체일부

Ex) He caught me by the neck.

② strike, hit, pat, touch, kiss : S + V + O + on the 신체일부

Ex) He struck me no the ear.

③ look, gaze, stare : S + V + O + in the 신체일부

Ex) I looked him in the eyes.

 

8. 종족전체를 대표하는 경우. (부정관사와 쓰임이 동일)

the + 형용사 : 복수 보통명사

Ex) The rich are not always happier than the poor

the + 형용사 : 추상명사

Ex) He would often leave the right to persue the expedient.

the + 보통명사 : 추상명사

Ex) The pen is mightier that the sword

the + 복수명사 : 전체

Ex) They are the pictures of his own painting

 

2) 고유명사 앞에는 정관사를 붙이지 않는 것이 원칙이나 아래의 경우에는 예외적으로 붙인다.

① 산맥, 국가, 국민, 가족 이름 등 복수형 고유명사  

Ex) the Alps, the United states, the Smiths, the English

② 강, 해협, 운하, 바다, 사막이름

Ex) the Nile, the Mediterrenean, the Cananl, the Sahara

③ 배, 열차 이름

Ex) the KTX, the Mayflower

④ 공공 건물, 기관 이름

Ex) the White house, the British Museum

⑤ 신문, 잡지 이름

Ex) the New York Times.

 

cf. 공원, 정거장, 거리, 호수, 만, 공공건물, 시설 등이 고유명사 이름을 동반할 때에도 정관사를 생략한다.
